Baltimore Station
Updated: February 3, 2010
WELCOME TO THE STATION'S TEAM PAGE!
The BSTAT team kicked off 2010 with the Resolution Run 5k race in Patterson Park. As always, Back on My Feet Baltimore had a fantastic turnout and was well-represented in the awards ceremony. Congratulations to all participants!
On Jan. 15th, BSTAT attended a local high school basketball game to support non-rez member Matt Tully's team. The group was surprised and excited to see Cal Ripken in the stands! Matt's team won and Cal was happy to learn about what Back on My Feet is doing for our city, so the night was a doubly successful!
This month Mitch, Ty, and Walt all reached 100 miles, and Brian reached 75. Mike and Brian have also landed jobs! Mike is now a certified pharmacist, and Brian is substitute teaching for the Baltimore City school system. Kenny and Rob, who are taking classes this semester, have both applied for computer equipment through the Next Steps program. Finally, Rob was elected as the new BSTAT team captain. He is already stepping up into the role and proving to be a great leader. We couldn't be more proud of all of these guys!
The non-residential members at the Station have also had a lot going on this month. Nikia left her position as Team Organizer to take over the Next Steps program for BOMF-Baltimore. We're happy to report that she plans to continue running with the Station when she has meeting-free mornings. Pat Hiban volunteered to take over the Team Organizer core role. Pat's close relationships with our residential-members will make him a successful and influential organizer.
As the days are slowly getting longer, BSTAT is staying motivated by training for Nikia's Nippy Nor'easter Half Marathon coming up at the end of February. Check back for results of the first race put together entirely by and for BOMF-Baltimore!

Distance: 1 - 9 miles
TEAM LEADER: ANNI IRVINE

Anni spent her entire life in rural America before moving to Baltimore to become a nerdy graduate student. She joined BOMF soon after her arrival and is continually amazed at how it brings together such a diverse group of people, who are working toward goals as a community of equals. "BOMF does so many wonderful things for every life it touches. i feel like a real part of Baltimore now and have so many friends all over so many facets of the city!"
MEMBER OF THE MONTH: GEORGE H.

Shoe size: 11
Member since: June 2009
Number of miles accumulated: 225
Best moment since joining BOMF: The Meyerhoff bash. I really liked the talk by Annie. I had heard some of the story about how she started the group, but this time I heard the whole story. It was very inspiring.
Biggest challenge with running: Getting up at 5 o’clock, and getting my wind and my health back. But after I run, I feel good for the rest of the day.
Goal in the next three months: I’m starting at Baltimore City Community College on Feb. 2. I’m going to get recertified as a medicine aide, which means I can dispense medicine.
What do you think about when you're running?: I have a sense of freedom when I run. I think about all the things I’ve accomplished. I’ve got certificates in fiber optics and copper wiring.
Next race with the BOMF crew: Nikia’s Nippy Nor’eastern Half-Marathon.
“I don't think there is a more entertaining person to run with than George. George has a story about everything. No matter the topic, George will hypnotize you with his humor and contagious laugh so much that you will forget you are running! George is such a great team member because he makes each individual feel important. He remembers a person's details and uses that to engage you as part of the team. He gives a lot of himself to the team, and I'm sure that all of us can think of a time when we were the lucky recipient of a "George-ism." Even though George struggled with running in the beginning, he never gave up, and he showed that commitment can lead to success. He is most definitely a bright light on those dark mornings and a great role model for every runner!” – Gina Ruggieri, social coordinator
NON-RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: GINA R.

Shoe size: 7.5
Member since: May 2009
Best moment since joining BOMF: The Baltimore Running Festival really brought out a lot of memorable moments. I think my favorite moment on that day was when Anni and Darrell crossed the finish line (Darrell running the last leg of the team relay and Anni running the full marathon with the team). I remember being so proud to be part of such a devoted team. I felt so privileged to witness that commitment from both nonresidents and residents, and I was really inspired by everyone that day. I'll never forget it. I also really enjoyed Kenny's Killer Core Workout on Friday's. We really need to bring those back!
What do you think about when you're running?: Food … and what I’m going to eat when I’m finished. If there were chocolate-chip pancakes waiting for me at the finish line, I would definitely run faster.
Next race with the BOMF crew: Nikia’s Nippy Nor’eastern Half-Marathon!
“Gina, the social coordinator for Baltimore Station, made the holidays special for our team. During December and early January, she organized social events almost every week. We spent an afternoon with a local youth group, went to the BOMF Bash, had our own holiday party, saw a movie, were part of the Homeless Person’s Memorial Day and went to a basketball game. Gina does a ton of behind-the-scenes work for BOMF that typically goes unnoticed. So thanks, Gina, we love you!” -- Anni Irvine, Team Leader
