MCVET
Updated: March 2, 2010WELCOME TO TEAM MCVET!
Not even Snowmageddon could stop this team in its tracks. Training continued, nearly uninterrupted, for upcoming races such as the St. Patrick’s 5K in Baltimore, 10K in D.C., Nikia’s Half Marathon (rescheduled for late March), and even the Delaware Marathon in May. Margery hit the 100 mile mark while Greg was the second MCVET runner to amass a whopping 500 miles!
The team had a great monthly meeting on the 16th, and an awesome time cheering on the Loyola Greyhounds at a basketball game on the 20th. The team greeted newcomer David F., while keeping in touch with departing teammate, Adam, who continues to take classes and stay involved with BOMF. Team member George landed a job, while many team members used their snow days as extra study time while they pursue careers as radiology technicians, medical technicians, and addiction recovery therapists, to name a few.
Even during the few days where the roads were not safe for running, the residential members rotated use of the treadmill in the rec room to avoid getting cabin fever. And although the team will miss him dearly, we look forward to joining Patrick in his first run as team leader with BOMF Baltimore’s newest team: American Rescue Workers on Wednesday March 3rd!
TEAM INFORMATION
Inaugural Run: March 16, 2009
Location: 301 N. High St., Baltimore, MD map
Morning Runs: 5:30 AM (M, W, F)
Distance: 1 - 4 miles
TEAM LEADER: THERESA ALEXANDER
Shoe Size: 10
Theresa earned her master's degree in Speech Pathology from Loyola in 2005 and works at a local hospital. She has been in Baltimore for 10 years, but took up running only 4 years ago. Theresa's been running with MCVET since day one. "I know what running has done for me in terms of goal-setting, confidence-building, mood, and weight management. It's really incredible helping others to start experiencing those same benefits and then some."
MEMBER OF THE MONTH: GARY W.
Shoe size: 10
Member since: August 2009
Number of miles accumulated: 250
Best BOMF moment: The best moment is when we’re all together enjoying a monthly outing. Or when a team member is assisting you when might not feel like running on any given day. Or when you’re talking to different members about daily topics, stressful situations you encounter or career avenues.
Biggest challenge with running: Trying to keep a pace during regular runs that will allow me to have a greater finish in races. On some of our Saturday long-distance runs, I start too fast, and that has prevented me from finding a steady, comfortable pace.
Goal in the next three months: I hope to start school in the next month or so to become a medical office assistant or a surgical medical technician. I’m still researching my best career choices.
What do you think about when you're running?: I think about my wonderful kids, Nate and Brianna, or about plans I need to formulate to get into school.
What's the next race you're doing with the BOMF crew? My next race is on March 14 in Washington. I’m excited that my kids, Nate, 17, and Brianna, 14, will be there at that race.
Quote: “Gary has been one of the most consistent runners we’ve had on MCVET’s team. Since he joined the team in August, Gary has enjoyed running in events such as the Marine Corps 10K and a great training run on the NCR Trail in Baltimore County. He plans ahead so that his kids and family can come to support and cheer him on whenever we’re in or near D.C. Gary hopes to re-enter the workforce, possibly in the field of green jobs, and he’s connected and networked with many of the non-residential members who are supporting him in his search for the best job-training programs. Gary is so pleasant and friendly that all of the team members look forward to running with him. His conversations help keep the miles flying by!." -- Theresa Alexander, team leader
NON-RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: PATRICK RANGE
Shoe size: 12.5
Member since: October 2009
Best BOMF moment: Recently, on one of our Saturday runs, when all four teams got together, there were only three things on the road: cars, snow and us. It was really surreal to see everyone together out on a tough day. Another best moment was going duckpin bowling. The car ride was very entertaining with Gary and Wayne.
What do you think about when you're running?: I think about my breathing and my steps. Both sort of help me think about what happened the day before and what I want to do with the day ahead.
“Patrick came to MCVET’s team shortly after coming to the city of Baltimore and quickly felt comfortable in his new home. Although we haven’t been able to convert this Cleveland native to a Ravens fan, he’s quickly become one of Back on My Feet Baltimore’s BIGGEST supporters. He’s been a really good sport, from getting “spooked” on his first run on Halloween to his “graceful” triple axel on the ice. Pat has helped keep residential and non-residential members alike energized and enthusiastic about running, no matter what kind of weather Mother Nature brings us. Although we hate to see him go, we know that he will be a FANTASTIC team leader at BOMF Baltimore’s fifth team: The American Rescue Workers. We will miss you, Patrick!” -- Theresa Alexander, team leader
